bohemian

(noun) : a person, as an artist or writer, who lives and acts free of regard for conventional rules and practices.

I’ve been attracted to the bohemian, Free People, aesthetic for many years now, but I never really believed I could pull it off. Maybe I like it because I am a Type A personality; I might be imaginative, but I certainly don’t live outside societal bounds or push the limits very far. I am a rule follower. But clothing allows for a little eccentricity without real risk, at least on your days off. My favorite thrift store in town occasionally carries clothing from Free People in my size and I’ve begun snatching it up when I can find it.

Moving allows for reinvention. I can be anything I want to be; I’m not barred by past assumptions. And I realize I never really was.

livewear

Today, a live/wear inspired by this wonderful side table setting and wall display. Mint green and pale blue anchor various textures, prints, and mediums to create a cohesive, visually exciting space. I love when a space, or an outfit, manages to be both interesting and relatively laid back. I tried to capture the feel and color scheme of the home design with lived-in basics, vintage details, and pattern mixing. I love those boots in particular. I would definitely wear this outfit.

My style has become more laid back and less prissy since moving here. I think it has to do with feeling more settled and less scrutinized. I feel more comfortable in my own skin than I did in Tallahassee. Maybe I needed a fresh start. Leaving the style blog world behind has done wonders for my confidence, as well. When you’re photographing your outfits daily, you feel pressured to always bring something new and interesting to the table. Now I don’t worry about wearing the same, beloved shoes 3 days in a row. Who cares? Wear what makes you feel good about yourself; wear what works for your lifestyle; wear what you can afford.

Before the month is over, I intend to enjoy:

  • Making use of my scarf collection
  • Comfy cardigans and flattering jeans worn out in the lovely, mildly cool weather
  • The printed tees I’ve added to my wardrobe lately
  • My gray, second-hand Minnetonka moccasins
  • Crossbody Vera Bradley bags, perfect for adventures
  • Old school Madeline L’Engle books and literature on Christian Feminism
  • My ballet classes; I wish I could go more than once a week
  • Hot chocolate and mochas
  • The colorful fall landscape along Skyline Drive

personal style

I have always had a lot of confidence in my taste and ability to mix and match patterns and colors to make visually interesting outfits and rooms. I think I have a good eye and know what suits my body type. But occasionally, I get stuck. In college, I had a fun time experimenting with style, color, and form. After graduating, however, my job as a framer required a lackluster uniform of khaki pants, brown closed-toe shoes, and modest tops (and an ill-fitting, blue vest emblazoned with the corporate logo). That paired with a professional need to look my age (I was often mistaken for a high schooler) took a toll on my daily style. I had a style blog the whole time, too, but I didn’t always feel that put together.

I recently asked a ModCloth ModStylist to take a look at my current comforts and help bring me out of my box of striped tops and plain, knit skirts. I had low expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised by the result. It helps to get an outside perspective on personal style in the same way it helps to talk out any other issue with a friend. I came out of the brief interchange with a more defined sense of my taste and renewed enjoyment of getting dressed in the mornings.

The polyvore set ModStylist Amy put together is below (click on the embedded set to view product information; you will be redirected to polyvore). I let her know that I am most drawn to floral and polka dot prints, have a pear-shaped figure, and admire Kate Bosworth’s style, as well as silhouettes from the 70s and 90s.

I don’t see myself wearing boyfriend jeans or platforms anytime soon, but I appreciate that my comfort zone has been stretched. I particularly love the polka dot-floral combo in the center and the dress on the right. Amy did a great job of choosing basics with visual interest, which is right up my alley.

After viewing her recommendations, I put together my own set of prints and styles I like:

Even if you don’t feel stuck, or don’t have a specific occasion to prepare for, you may want to take advantage of ModCloth’s free ModStylist program. It was a fun, quick, positive experience.

inspired: Stanislav Sidorov

Etsy suggested the work of Stanislav Sidorov to me; they know me well. His pared down outlines, bold colors, and hazy landscapes combine my two favorite genres: Japanese watercolor and Van Gogh-esque post-Impressionism. Sidorov’s work is dreamy and joyful. His subjects emphasize the vivacity of daily experience, uncovering a hint of the divine in the terrestrial.

In his words:

I like small towns’ secluded streets and old architecture. They inspire nostalgia about previous generations, events and cultures and capture the beauty, wonder and emotion of the human experience .

Whether it is a portrait, a genre, a landscape or a still-life, – I Like touching one’s soul, challenging one’s mind, and not allowing the beholder to remain indifferent.

Today was all about relaxation (and bluegrass and pest control, but more on that later, maybe). I had the day off, which was awesome since I experienced unexplained nausea yesterday evening.

I did a little online window shopping via polyvore. These items would be great late summer/early fall updates to my wardrobe.

  1. Sheer plaid shirt: I saw one like it at Target the other day and really like the idea. I’m into layering button downs over dresses.
  2. Hi-lo hem knit shirt: I love knits.
  3. Classic striped sweatshirt: As much as I’d like to think I am risk taker when it comes to personal style, I love classic silhouettes, comfy knits, and stripes.
  4. Tapestry-inspired dress: it looks rich, but it’s still in a light weight fabric.
  5. Enamel animal necklace: simple, whimsical, easy to wear.
  6. Color block dress: I’m been into yellow lately. I like the shape of this dress. I think it’d suit my pear-shaped frame (I think “dew drop” is supposed to be the new, more flattering description).
  7. Big, cozy cardigan: I love cardigans, the more like a blanket, the better.
  8. High waist, stretch jeans: these are hard to find in an affordable price range. I really just want to live in jeggings and the higher waist suits my body type better.
  9. Polka dot skirt: I already have a polka dot skirt, but this navy one is classy.
  10. A-line skirt: I like the vintage, 1940s look.
  11. Oxford boots: Lace up boots are my favorite. I think I need some in dark brown.
  12. Floral sandals: these have nothing to do with colder weather, but I have some similar ones from Target and love the style.
  13. Gray flats: I like the streamlined look of these and the little bow.

the bedroom

I plan to redesign my bedroom right after the move in comforting shades of gray, yellow, and robin’s egg blue. There will be a lot of DIY involved, as I don’t have the funds to go out and buy new home goods.

Projects for this room makeover include:

  • removing dye from a beige tapestry and turning it into curtains
  • making 2-4 pillow cases
  • painting black lamp bases yellow
  • photo canvas transfers
